Make a Better Planet: Northwest Youth Corps' Community Wildfire Protection Corps crews integrate team-based work projects, education, and professional trainings into a program that stresses personal growth and the development of resource management skills. Spend 10 weeks protecting communities across Oregon from wildfires by doing fuels reduction, enhancing natural habitats, and removing invasive species. Play a vital role in improving communities in need and the environment.

Build a Better You: Gain certifications, work experience and references needed to open career pathways and get you moving towards your dream job. Crew members can use this opportunity as a steppingstone towards starting a career in natural resource management, outdoor recreation, forestry, or working for other environmental nonprofits. Others, who may not be interested in working in the green jobs sector, use this work experience as a chance to gain easily transferable job skills, travel to new places, meet new people, and spend weeks bettering their community.

Benefits: This Northwest Youth Corps position is operated in partnership with AmeriCorps, our country's national service program. AmeriCorps members complete paid terms of national community service to address our nation's most pressing issues. As an AmeriCorps member you will receive a living allowance of $4,235 stipend along with earning a $1,678 AmeriCorps Education Award for a total benefit of $5,913.   • Training/Professional Development, this comprehensive training will not exceed 20% of total member service hours and may cover the following topics:

  • USDA Chainsaw Operation and Maintenance
  • Brush Cutter Operation

  • Wood Chipper Operation
  • Driver and Trailer Use
  • Tool Use and Maintenance
  • Defensible Space Inspection Training
  • Work Site Analysis
  • Crew Management and Motivation
  • Conservation Education
  • Risk Management and Safety Procedures
  • Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

  • Anaphylaxis training
  • IS-100, IS-700, S-130, S-190, L-180. By taking and completing the above courses, this will result in you having taken all course requirements needed for Entry Level Wildland Firefighter (NWCG Firefighter 2) certification (i.e. Red Card). Having your "Red Card" will allow you to be employed as a Wildland Firefighter.
  • CWPC Crew members can gain industry-recognized credentials and skills that can be added to their CV/Resume. These will assist Crew members in gaining access to outdoor related career outlets.
  • Gear and Safety Equipment provided: 2 field work shirts, eye protection, ear protection, hard hat and more.

Required Qualifications

  • 19-26 years old (age at enrollment) with High School Diploma or GED
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs,. hike several miles, and be on foot for 8 hours per day
  • Positive mental attitude, flexibility and commitment to success.
  • Ability to pass a criminal history background check and follow safety protocols
